Aspen Burl Vessel

This burl was found in an area burned over in a recent wildfire. The host aspen tree had been killed in the conflagration, but this mysterious burl remained high off the ground and unscathed.

This vessel celebrates the scars and intricacies of its life. The stunning figure is characteristic of burls, and the outside of the vessel is sanded smooth and finished in oil to show off the complex grain character. The inside of the vessel is dyed black to evoke the life ending fire that took the host tree's life. The dyed interior sets up an interesting contrast with the oil exterior. Natural voids in the vessel also make use of the interplay of negative space and light.

Certainly a one-of-a-kind piece!
