Don McIvor
river birch bowl in black and blue

$250.00
The wood for this piece came from trees thinned from a property between Winthrop and Mazama, WA. The grain has an interesting if subtle interplay of light sapwood with gradations of dark heartwood, along with some reddish growth rings.
The exterior is decorated with milk paint. Underlying layers of black paint were top coated with soldier blue. The blue paint was then sanded back to reveal hints of the black beneath. The paint has been burnished smooth before applying finish to the entire vessel. The painted area looks and feels a bit like pottery, setting up an interesting contrast between the finished wood and the painted area.
This vessel is suitable for food service, or could simply be a display piece to set off a table.
