river birch bowl in red and black
The wood for this piece came from trees thinned from a property between Winthrop and Mazama, WA. The grain has an interesting if subtle interplay of light sapwood with gradations of dark heartwood, along with some reddish growth rings.
A section of the exterior is setoff between fine grooves and decorated with milk paint. Underlying layers of barn red paint were top coated with black paint. The black paint was then sanded back to reveal hints of the red beneath. The paint has been burnished smooth before applying finish to the entire vessel. The painted area looks and feels a bit like pottery, setting up an interesting contrast between the finished wood and the painted area.
This vessel is suitable for food service, or could simply be a display piece to set off a table.
